What is Network
Transformation?

Federal DoD and military clients are already undergoing fiber upgrade initiatives as copper networks become more and more antiquated and unreliable.  However, many continue to leave special circuits on the copper infrastructure due to budgetary constraints.  Abacus has been successful working with our military and government partners to find low-cost, technology solutions that provide the last-step in the transformation to all-fiber networks, instantly increasing the security of their Communications systems and delivering better reliability to the various end-users.

Abacus provides network design and configuration recommendations as a part of their efforts to clear the old copper cable plant, whereby clearing much-needed underground duct structures that can then be used for future fiber MILCON projects.  An all-fiber network reduces personnel requirements for network operations, engineering, and maintenance and Abacus provides updated system records and as-built documentation, resulting in a modernized utility infrastructure.

Benefits of a Network Transformation

Removing old copper to clear ducts for new fiber and moving analog circuit onto fiber (or consolidating them on a single copper cable) is key to transformation. On many military bases, copper is used for analog special circuit supporting alarms, crash phones, ILS systems and similar, essential systems. It results in severely, underutilized copper plant and the costly need to manage and maintain separate fiber and copper networks.

Network transformation provides immediate advantages operationally, allowing end-users to retain legacy equipment and services, but with the conversion from copper to fiber entirely transparent to the user. The main benefits are the streamlining of maintenance through consolidation and elimination of aging copper plant and the dramatic improvement in reliability and added security that fiber provides.
